Our whole life did not fit into two trucks
We are leaving that old Arab villa in Umm Suqeim — the one we lived in for almost four years — and moving into an apartment on Palm Jumeirah.
“Moving from a villa to an apartment” sounds a little like we have decided to make life smaller. But the apartment is large, on the ground floor, with a terrace, and the sea is just across the road through the neighbouring building — plus all the advantages of the Palm. So it is more accurate to say we are not downsizing; we are simply changing the scenery.
From an old Arab home with stairs, a courtyard, and an endless number of corners — to the sea, the promenade, and a new family life on Palm Jumeirah.
When two trucks turned out not to be enough
Today’s big discovery: over a few years, a family of five can accumulate a truly astonishing amount of stuff.
Union Movers arrived with two large moving trucks. We looked at the trucks, then at the house, and decided everything would surely fit.
It did not fit!!!
We had to call in a small extra pickup for the final wave of our family civilisation: boxes, furniture, children’s things, and all the things that somehow look “quite small” right up until the last minute.
In the end, moving out of the villa looked almost like a small military operation: two large trucks, one pickup, and a team of people who knew exactly what they were doing.
A move for AED 2,100
This entire operation cost us AED 2,100.
And this was not simply a matter of loading boxes and taking them from one address to another.
The team brought the packing materials, boxes, and crates themselves. They packed everything carefully, wrapped the furniture in protective film, dismantled what needed dismantling, loaded it up, brought it to the Palm, and then reassembled the furniture in the new apartment.
When they were done, they collected all the packing materials and left everything tidy.
By Dubai standards — especially considering the scale of our move — that is an excellent price.
People you can trust with your home
But the cost is not even the most important part. Moving is always a moment of gentle madness. Dozens of boxes are everywhere, children have questions, the one thing you need is suddenly nowhere to be found, and you are trying to keep an eye on the old house, the new apartment, the trucks, and your own nervous system — all at once.
That is why it matters so much to have a calm, careful team working beside you.
The people from Union Movers did everything without fuss, but quickly. They did not throw anything around, protected the furniture meticulously, handled our belongings with care, and kept asking exactly where each item should go.
At some point, we simply stopped watching over them, because it became clear: these people know their job.
And that is probably the best compliment any moving company can receive.
Next stop: the Palm
And so another big chapter of our Dubai life comes to an end. Today our old villa is gradually emptying out, while the new apartment on the Palm is filling with boxes, furniture, children’s toys, and the familiar family chaos.
For now, it is still hard to walk through the rooms properly, the internet is not connected, everything is in the wrong place, and finding a charger has become a quest of its own.
But we are already home
Now all that remains is to unpack the boxes. Which means roughly half of the move is still ahead of us.
